The Caves Campground

Camping  on the Kokosing State Scenic River.

August 27th, 1997, Governor George V. Voinovich announced that more than 47 miles of central Ohio’s Kokosing River has met the criteria to become Ohio’s newest State Scenic River.  Eight years later, on June 2005 it was dedicated as “Ohio’s first Water Trail,” by Sam Speck.

The Caves Campground is located on the Kokosing River downstream from Millwood. The Millwood Rd. River Access marks the beginning of the Kokosing State Scenic River’s most Scenic stretch. High sandstone bluffs line the river banks for the next 3.3 miles and can present challenging rapids. Factory rapids are normally class 1+ to II but under high flow conditions, these rapids can be considered Class III. The river then passes through a spectacular gorge and at one point the river is pinched down to 20 feet wide between large sandstone boulders.

The Cave’s Campground is located on the right side of the river shortly after gorge, nestled between steep hills and  sandstone cliffs. The start of the campground is marked with one cliff in particular. The Cave’s Campground gets it’s name from this landmark standing over 60 ft. high with a 20ft. overhang, the cliff continues for about 1/8 mile and ends at a breathtaking 40ft waterfall, (pictured above).

The River continues to offer beautiful scenery and short easy rapids till the Staat’s Rd. Bridge 3.7 miles from Millwood.

Canoe rental is available upstream  but  the canoe livery does not offer canoe trips past Millwood. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), does offer guided canoe tours through this area using there canoes.

We encourage you to bring your own canoes, kayak’s or tubes and enjoy this undisturbed stretch of the Kokosing Water trail.

Riverfront camping for RV’s and campers is available and some riverfront sites for tenters.

We are providing information about the Kokosing River Water Trail access points from the Department of Natural Resources. We will be glad to help your group plan a safe & memorable trip down the Kokosing River. A favorite among our campers is a 1 1/2 hour tube float from Millwood to the campground where you will enjoy the most scenic run of the river.
